June 9, 2021“Grief and Loss in the Time of COVID-19” with Dr. Deborah Carr
Description: The COVID-19 pandemic has taken nearly 600,000 lives in the U.S. and more than 3 million lives worldwide. Deaths from COVID exemplify a “bad death” – a death that comes unexpectedly, where the dying patient experiences discomfort, and the family is robbed of precious moments together at the end of life. Coping with COVID-19 deaths is different than other types of losses, because these deaths often have occurred alongside myriad other stressors, including job loss, financial strain, one’s own health problems, social isolation, residential changes, and profound uncertainty about what the future holds. We will discuss the elements of “good” and “bad” deaths, and how each shapes the grief experienced by family and loved ones. We will focus on ways to cope with loss when it co-occurs with other stressors, and the very people we usually turn to for support are not able to provide assistance. We will talk about ways of coping with loss and stress more generally, and share strategies with one another.
